What are the different syllabus choices available in India?
The present system of education in India offers students various options for their Class X examination. There are state, national and international boards and they have been listed below:
- Indian Certificate for Secondary Education (ICSE)
- Central Board for Secondary Education (CBSE)
- Secondary School Leaving Certificate (SSLC)
- National Open School (NOS)
- International General Certificate of Secondary Education (IGCSE)
- International Baccalaureate (IB)
Amongst the Indian boards, in ICSE, doing subject based projects are an integral part. English literature is emphasised upon.
In CBSE, English is more functional and communication-based, not as much literature based. CBSE is a national curriculam and with Kendriya Vidyalayas established all over India, parents with transferable jobs prefer the CBSE syllabus. The Indian competitive exams are based on the CBSE syllabus.

The international boards cater to a wider range of abilities. From an international board, a student can consider admissions both to Indian as well as foreign institutions for higher studies. It is said that the international boards emphasise on thinking and encourage learning for life as opposed to learning for an exam.
IB apparently emphasises on creative and logical application of knowledge. IB takes into consideration that the children have mixed abilities and varied interests. Also IB offers a huge range of subjects to choose from.
The IGCSE is a two-year study programme – for the 14 to 16 age group – globally recognised as being equivalent in standard to the British GCSE. It is designed to meet teaching and learning needs the world over. ICGSE also offers a diverse and a wide-ranging curriculum.
